A media blitz
During my internship, I pitched for and secured high profile guests for our online financial video programs. I also went out on interviews, helping presenters prepare and talking with the guests, including world-renowned hedge fund managers, about their opinions on the financial issues of the day.
Internship training
The training I received on the various different software Thomson Reuters uses, as well as on journalistic ethics and sourcing meant that I could hit the ground running on day one.
Quick thinking
I am currently research assistant to the editor of Reuters Breakingviews. I conduct research for topical articles, mainly on global finance and the political economy. I also write the ‘context news’ section, an outline of the background to each article, which appears on the Breakingviews website.

A newsworthy career change
I started my career with financial firms in New York and Washington, DC, but then went back to school for journalism. My experience as a summer intern at Thomson Reuters – the stories I covered, the contacts I made and the reporting and writing I produced – was key to bridging the gap from school to full time journalist and instrumental in my being hired full time by the company after graduation. Now I have taken a lead role for reporting general news in and around Boston and New England since the launch of the Thomson Reuters domestic news service.

An intern with energy

I now work as a journalist covering the oil industry. I've worked on the New York energy team for about three years. Before I started, I knew very little about oil. It's been a challenge to learn about this market which has such a profound influence on everyday life.
Clarity out of complexity
The oil industry is notoriously insular and opaque. It can be a challenge to get information and it takes time to develop the trust of trade sources.
When oil prices rose to a record high above $147 a barrel, I did a series of stories on how oil prices were affecting the lives of Americans ranging from taxi drivers to the military to schoolchildren. I enjoy making these connections between industry and the individual.

In my spare time, I like to take photographs, one of which is currently part of an HIV-awareness billboard campaign in Harlem, New York.

Immediate immersion
Following a summer as a financial journalism intern and a short spell freelancing on the sports desk, I joined the London government bonds team on a permanent basis. I started here during one of the most significant crises in the eurozone's history. It has been a baptism by fire, but a fantastic experience being at the center of the story driving global financial markets.

Making it clear for clients
There is a constant need to expand and develop my knowledge of financial markets to understand complicated ideas and express them clearly for readers. Working under intense time pressure is one of the more challenging aspects of this job.
Interns obtain real-world experience
The internship set me up well for this role by giving me a taste of just what was required to work in editorial and the high standards colleagues and clients expect. The opportunity to make contacts during the internship helped me to find a permanent opportunity.
